Dr. Renu Kumar has served as a faculty member at Minnesota State and College system for fourteen years. She has managed several NSF-funded and Minnesota State-funded grants with a STEM focus, promoting undergraduate research and other innovative pedagogies, including a current NSF STEM grant. She serves as a mentor for undergraduate researchers. Dr. Kumar is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology and has delivered presentations and published several journal articles in the field of microbiology.

Dr. Kumar has volunteered her time to several STEM-related initiatives including the Minnesota Microscopy Society since 2001 encouraging kids to become interested in science through microscopy demonstrations during science events, such as Super Science Saturday at 3M, Science Fest, Mathematics Family Fun Fair at the University of Minnesota and Microscopy Day at Minnesota Science Museum. She has volunteered to be a Judge at the Minnesota Academy of Sciences at the State Science Fair and is a lifetime member of the Minnesota Academy of science. She holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Genetics and Ph.D. in Genetics and Microbial Biotechnology.
